A verruca is a viral infection on the sole of the foot caused by HPV. They are common and can affect both children and adults.
Common signs include:
-
Rough or grainy skin on the foot
-
Small black dots within the lesion
-
Discomfort or pain when walking or standing
Verrucas are contagious and are often picked up in swimming pools, changing rooms, and communal showers.
Treatment may be advised if:
-
The verruca is painful
-
It is spreading or not improving
-
Home treatments haven’t worked
-
You have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity
To help prevent spread:
-
-
Do not pick or scratch the verruca
-
Don’t share towels, socks, or footwear
-
Cover verrucas when swimming
If you are unsure whether a lesion is a verruca or it is causing discomfort, our podiatrist can assess and advise on appropriate treatment.
